Three Weeks In on the Mac
Three Weeks In on the Mac
I've now been using a MacBook Pro for about three weeks. And yes, before you say it, I bought it right before Apple announced a new one.
Picked it up Presidents' Day weekend at Best Buy, got a solid deal and grabbed the warranty while I was at it. Then, about two weeks later, Apple announced the updated model. Classic. That said, I don't regret it.
For some context: I've owned a Mac before, but I never used one for work. The software our industry runs on has historically required Windows, and honestly that's still true to some degree. Our AMS HawkSoft 6 runs on a desktop application, not a full browser-based AMS, topic for another day, so I had to download Parallels to run it.
Here's what actually surprised me: the 14-inch M4 chip with 24GB of memory is noticeably faster and more capable than any of the high-RAM Windows laptops I've bought over the years. I don't know if it's the architecture or what, but the difference is real and I felt it quickly.
The bigger thing for me has been the ecosystem. I already use an iPhone, so having my texts, reminders, two-step verification prompts, and calendar all synced across both devices without any setup friction has been a legitimate quality-of-life improvement. I didn't expect that to matter as much as it does. And I haven't had to give anything up on the Microsoft side, Teams, To Do, and Loop all run perfectly. Best of both worlds isn't a phrase I use lightly, but it applies here.
One more thing worth mentioning: this past weekend I picked up the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad. Game changer. The trackpad in particular, if you're spending long hours at a computer, you know the hand and wrist fatigue that comes with a traditional mouse. With the trackpad, you're just moving your finger. Gestures work naturally; switching windows is easier, and it feels a lot closer to using an iPad than a traditional desktop setup. The keyboard is compact and clean. Both were worth it.
Could I put my whole team on Macs tomorrow? No. We're leasing Dells and that works for our setup. But for me personally, as someone running multiple tools and leaning harder into AI every month, this has been the right move.
If you've been sitting on the fence about it, my honest take: if you're already in the iPhone ecosystem and you're ready to stop fighting your laptop, it's worth considering.
More soon.
